Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween to all of my lovely readers! Hurricane Sandy kind of put a wrench in my Halloween planning, but I was still able to get into the Halloween spirit a bit.

In preparing for Halloween, I was looking for a manicure to capture the holiday. I came up with Candy Corn inspired nails.

Using a gold nail color I got from my monthly Birchbox (called Disco Nap) and an orange color I got from a Fall Swap (called Cloud 9), I created the above manicure. I have never done an accent nail before, but blogging and seeing other nail trends led me to experiment and I really liked the results. (Come back Friday to read about the Fall Swap!)

Since tonight is Halloween, Tolar and I will pass out candy to the cuties that live in our neighborhood. Tolar loves to assemble goodie bags for all of the Trick or Treaters and we both love to give out good candy! This year we are handing out bags filled with Snickers, Kit Kats, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Smarties. All of our favorites (we are just missing the Nerds, that whole bag got eaten before we could assemble everything!).

Here are some photos of the goodies we will pass out.
Aren't these such cute bags?

Here's the candy, I hope the stash makes it through the night.  :)

I hope everyone has an awesome holiday. Leave me a comment below to tell me what your plans are.

(I’m participating in the Halloween party that lovenailpolish is throwing over on her blog: Addicted to OPI-yum)

Loving Lately: Clinique’s Moisture Surge

Tinted Moisturizer is not anything new, I’m sure a lot of you already use one.  But I have spent years looking for one that provides enough coverage, yet is easy to put on when I’m in a rush (or just looking for some minimal weekend makeup). I finally found one I like: Clinique’s Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum.
[via]
Back in August, I stopped by Clinique to pick up some new foundation and received their awesome Bonus gift (I could do a whole Loving Lately post on the Bonus gifts, because they are always awesome!). In the gift was a very generous sample size of the Moisture Surge. I added this product to my Saturday morning makeup routine and I don’t think I’m ever going back! Unlike other tinted moisturizers I've tried, this one provides lots of coverage and it lasts. Normally I feel like the other ones only last about 30 minutes before they just disappear. Clinique’s Moisture Surge is a great substitution to my workday foundation and powder; its super light, goes on my face very quickly (I really just spread it on like regular moisturizer) and offers the full coverage that I am looking for. I love this product!

For anyone looking to use a tinted moisturizer in place of foundation everyday, this product is for you. You get similar results to foundation, but with a super light formula and minimal application time. (I know I sound redundant, but I’m trying to get across just how awesome this product is.)

So thank you Clinique for offering great products and amazing Bonus gifts!

More Scarves Than One Person Should Have

So you probably already know from this post that I love scarves. It is kind of ridiculous just how many I have in my closet, but I really don’t care. Adding a scarf to an outfit makes me happy and that’s part of the reason I started this blog…to talk about happy things and personal style.

My sweet friend Rebekah asked me to show different ways to wear scarves and I accepted her suggestion. Below are some of my favorite ways that I wear my scarves; these are by no means all the ways to wear scarves. If you check out Pinterest, you can probably find plenty more ways to wear them. But these are my favorites. (Enjoy my headless fashion show)

1.) With a thin, silk scarf I just like to leave it long
Scarf: Macy's (old)

2.) Tie a simple knot
Scarf: gift

3.) An infinity scarf wrapped around twice
Scarf: Frock Candy

4.) The basic loop and thru (I wear a lot of my scarves like this in the winter more for functionality and warmth than fashion)
Scarf: Gap

5.)  Wrap the scarf around your neck and let the ends hang loose. I prefer to have the ends a little uneven (watch out – I’m getting kinda crazy over here!)
Scarf: DSW

Do you have a different way that you wear a scarf? Tweet me a pic @lindsaytolar.

High Five For Friday

Friday is here again, sorry for posting so late, I was visiting my fabulous college girlfriends and we were in a location without much internet access. But hey, better late than never. I’m linking up again with Lauren over at From My Grey Desk.

1.) Tolar and I volunteered at Food and Friends DC with our friend Ebony, as part of our church’s Blitz Week.

2.) Tolar, Bestie and I participated in the Color Run at the National Harbor. The race was pretty fun, the pictures were super fun.

3.) I am blessed with a man who supports me through everything and sends me encouraging texts when I am overwhelmed!

4.) I’m participating in a giveaway over on Carly’s blog, Lipgloss and Crayons…check it out here to win great prizes.

5.) I got to spend three days with my college girlfriends, who are some of my best friends. We have known each other for 12 years and even though many miles separate us, we can easily pick right back up. I’ll write more on these fab girls later!!!

Hope you had a great week. See ya Monday!

The Best Thing Pinterest Ever Taught Me

I have learned quite a lot of great things from Pinterest – new outfit creations, awesome recipes, holiday DIY and even some organizing tips. However, nothing comes close to being as amazing as what I am going to impart on all of you.

This super easy trick has been life changing in the kitchen and has saved me tons of time. Pinterest taught me how to shred chicken in just a few seconds.

The only thing you need? One of these:
[via]

Here’s what you do:
-Cook chicken as desired
-Place the chicken (while still warm) into your Kitchen Aid mixing bowl
-Make sure to use the paddle attachment and turn the mixer on medium for about 10 seconds
-Voila! You have shredded chicken and just earned yourself an extra 10 minutes catching up on Revenge [insert your favorite tv show here]

[via]

A few notes:
-This works best with warm chicken, cool chicken may be harder to shred
-If you want your chicken to be shredded really fine, just leave the mixer on longer

There you have it! I hope you enjoy this awesome trick as much as I do.

Check Out La Vie Petite

Y’all – you MUST check out La Vie Petite. I have been a faithful reader of Cori’s awesome fashion blog for about a year now and I feel the need to share her amazingness with you. I go to her blog daily to get outfit inspiration for my own wardrobe. This beauty can take pieces from [my favorite store] Ann Taylor LOFT, Old Navy, Gap, Target, Marshall’s, even thrift store finds and turn the outfits into fashion gold!

[via]

Not only is her blog great because of her incredible style, but I love reading about her love for her husband (she calls him Mister) and her beautiful children (the littles). It’s so refreshing to read blog posts from someone who has so much love to pour out. Because I was slightly obsessed with reading Cori’s blog, I decided to sponsor it. And now I want to share the love with you. (No, Cori has no idea I’m even posting this – but she is so awesome, you must check her out! Plus she has her own clothing line; the skirt below - yeah she made it!)

You can find Cori at La Vie Petite by clicking here.

Enjoy and happy styling!

Loving Lately: DC Sisterhood

I teased you a little about DC Sisterhood's Night of Pink in my High Five For Friday post, but now here are the full details.

First - what is DC Sisterhood?
This is the women's ministry of DC Metro Church that meets once a month to gather together as women to worship our Savior Jesus Christ, pray for each other and to receive a dynamic, life-giving message from Pastor Taryn Stine. The service is always so uplifting, with Pastor Taryn offering up a message that truly speaks right to what I am walking through in my daily life. She and her husband, our lead Pastor, have such an anointing on their lives where the Holy Spirit flows through them. They are able to speak right into the issues and challenges that so many of the church members are facing and give us practical tips on how to thrive during each season. Its like they know exactly what we need to hear!

I love DC Sisterhood for many reasons and one reason is the outreach that we do in the community. Each month we hold a Be Her Change initiative where we gather items for a different charity. This month was totally dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness (hence the Pink!) and we collected travel toiletries and donated loose change to Capital Breast Care Center. It’s so awesome to be able to help those in need and DC Sisterhood does a great job of partnering with local organizations.

The Night of Pink at DC Sisterhood was all about a celebration. We wanted to honor anyone who is currently battling breast cancer or who had battled it in the past; we also wanted to just honor every single woman that walked through the door. And boy did the serve team do just that! From an awesome pink carpet leading into the sanctuary to the amazing pink spread of candies and cupcakes to a powerful message on God's plan for our lives (We are part of God's master plan and His Sovereign plan will prevail; Our problems will all work out - He promises that He is working everything out for our good), the night was spectacular. One large nugget I pulled from Pastor Taryn's message: Being a Christian is not about us - it is about laying our lives down for God's plan so others can meet Jesus. Amen!

DC Sisterhood is such an awesome break during the month from the stresses of everyday life. It's a great opportunity to connect with other ladies and to be accepted for exactly who you are - junk and all! Because after all, God is love!

Check out all of these shots I snapped from the night:

My sweet friend Faith walking the pink carpet.
My new friend Elizabeth and the awesome Director of DC Sisterhood Ebony.
They even added pink to the sink - love the details ladies!

There is more mercy in Christ than sin in me - Amen!!!!
A packed house!

October Birchbox

I got my October Birchbox in the mail last week! Seeing that box always sends a rush of excitement through me - what’s going to be in it?

This month Birchbox partnered with goop.com; I didn’t know anything about goop until I did a little research and I found out that the company was founded by Gwyneth Paltrow. It is a lifestyle website, finding all sorts of positive and cool things for their readers to check out. From a recipe, to a wardrobe staple or a home accessory, they cover it. So go check it out!

Now on to this month’s Birchbox. Here’s what came in mine this month:

1.) Kusmi Teas – I got them in Detox and Euphoria blend, can’t wait to taste them (though it is kind of weird that teas came in a beauty box, but oh well , beauty needs to come from the inside out and I certainly need to detox and rest!).

2.) Essie Nail Polish, Fair Game – I love Essie and I’m super happy that Birchbox sent me a full size bottle.

3.) MALIN+GOETZ Body Moisturizer – I haven’t gotten to try this yet, but with the winter weather approaching I’m happy to have a new moisturizer in my beauty arsenal.

4.) Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum – This serum is weightless and easy to wear under your makeup.

5.) MALIN+GOETZ grapefruit face cleanser – This sample was a beauty extra in the box and I’m always happy to try a new cleanser. It smells great!

6.) Jouer Lip Enhancer – I was introduced to another Jouer product in a previous Birchbox and I am loving the brand. This lip enhancer moisturizes while also giving my lips a hint of gloss.

Have you subscribed to Birchbox yet? If not, click here to sign up!

High Five For Friday

It’s that magical time of the week again – FRIDAY!!! So I’m linking up with Lauren over at From My Grey Desk for her weekly post of five awesome things that happened during the week.

1.) Tolar made dinner – which in my book is winning every day. But not only did he make dinner, he made surf and turf! Yum-o!

2.) I got a new computer! Unfortunately this wasn't a planned expense as my other computer decided to not turn on anymore and Tolar realized that paying to get it fixed would cost just as much as a new computer – so off to Best Buy we went and got this beauty!

3.) My sweet friend Marcy gave me a gift just because. She saw this fab tape dispenser and immediately thought of me. She knows me so well!

4.) JoJo likes to lie beside me when I work in my office, which I adore. His recent choice of bed position has me a bit worried about his breathing though…

5.) The third Thursday of each month, my church hosts a service just for women called DC Sisterhood and this month’s theme was all about Breast Cancer Awareness titled “Night of Pink.” I’ll tell you more about the actual night next week, but the place was PACKED! It is so awesome to see God’s house filled to the brim with ladies running hard after Him.

Hope you had an awesome week too! Enjoy your weekend!

Current Crush: You Guys!

[via]

I am crushing on my lovely followers this week and ALWAYS. You all are amazing!

Since starting this blog (almost 2 months ago!!!!), I have received such great encouragement from friends, fellow bloggers and all of my followers. I am extremely humbled that so many people have checked out my corner of the internet and keep coming back. And to all of my new followers – welcome! I’m so glad you found my blog.

From the fabulous comments you leave here on the blog, to the many tweets I receive, to having people tell me in my daily life that they love my blog, I am so thankful for the love and support.

I started this blog for many reasons, but one big reason was to add a little more happiness to the very negative world that the internet has become. I'm so happy that you are enjoying my blog and what I write about, because I'm REALLY enjoying it. I love all of your ideas about things you want to read - keep those coming. And I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone even better.

So thank you for making me feel so welcome in the blog world and thank you for your support. My followers will always be important to me and will forever be a CURRENT CRUSH of mine.

(I’m linking up with Brittany over at YellowUmbrella for this post. Go check her blog out and maybe find a new blog or two to enjoy!)

PS – I finally created a facebook page for my blog: facebook.com/PursuitofPink

Gala Wrap Up

Monday night, my work (the Shakespeare Theatre Company) held our Annual Gala. This is a HUGE fundraiser for our theatre and quite a fun night too. Every year, we honor an actor who has made significant contributions to classical theatre and this year we honored F. Murray Abraham (you know, the guy from Amadeus). The night also includes a performance (I’m trying really hard not to use my official press release language to describe the evening) featuring multiple types of performing arts: opera, jazz, rap, modern dance and classical theatre were included this year. It’s such a cool idea bringing different art forms together to celebrate the greatest art form of all – theatre (hey, this is only my opinion!).

After the performance, everyone heads over to the GORGEOUS National Building Museum for dinner and dancing. I normally try to keep my composure and not go all “crazed fan” on people, as we rub elbows with the Washington and theatre elite. My first year, I was thrilled to be sharing a dance floor with David Gregory from NBC News.  I have always had an awesome time at the Gala (this was my fifth year!) and this year was no different. It’s such a good time getting to dance with my coworkers and supporters of the theatre and just celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, without having to worry about what’s coming next. For one night, we all dress up really fancy and just party!

Here are some shots from last night:
Tolar and I clean up pretty nice, if I say so myself.
You can dress him up, but you can't make him stop working.
Me and my girl Marcy - one of the best friends ever.
The National Building Museum is one of my favorite places, its so pretty.
A little sass never hurt this lady.
Paparazzi shot - that's our Artistic Director Michael Kahn introducing me to F. Murray Abraham.
Me and a fellow lady from the South, Emily - who is the sweetest thing around (and super pretty!).

My favorite part of the evening? Getting to dance with the love of my life – he’s a cutie.
